Even though it was such a strange month, I'm sorry to see it go. It was a cold, downright chilly month but in the end, it turned out okay. The peonies, roses and iris were later than usual, but none the worse for wear. My Peony 'Coral Charm' was just outstanding.
I also have a few roses. One is the climbing rose 'Colette', it was an impulse buy at Thanksgiving Farms in Adamstown, MD. Every May it's glorious!
The flowers begin apricot and change to pink.
My other two roses are floribundas. I mentioned Rose 'Cinco deMayo' earlier in May and now it's blooming as my Rhus 'Tiger Eye' swallows it whole.
I will edit to taste so the rose is happy.
Rose 'Scentimental' was my second impulse rose buy and lordy! it is fragrant (and gorgeous).
The iris were just over the top this year. Saddly the heat will finish them off in the next couple of days. Still one of my very favorites is Iris 'Once On A Lulluby'.
As I deadhead some of these beauties in the garden I can still look around and know that there's lots more to come. The rise in temperatures is a good thing, I love summer. Give me long days, tuberoses, colocasia and cicadas - especially the Brood II in all of its abundance. I see the positive things they do for the planet. Turtles, skunks, raccoons and maybe even foxes will feast on them. The ground will be aerated and the trees will be trimmed. As they die, the ground will be fed.
The sound they make is so orchestrated and incredible. Today was a happy day. A wonderful, giddy, happy day. Hello summer!
